What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a brand of Semaglutide. FDA has approved it for 4 uses. People take it once weekly, on the same day each week, at any time of day. The first labeled dose is 0.25 mg. The highest is 7.2 mg.

Approved uses

What is Wegovy approved to treat?

Adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one related health condition.

Labeled maintenance: 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg once weekly, 2.4 mg recommended

People age 12 and older with obesity.

Labeled maintenance: 2.4 mg recommended, or 1.7 mg once weekly

Adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight, to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and heart-related death.

Labeled maintenance: 2.4 mg recommended, or 1.7 mg once weekly

Adults with MASH and moderate to advanced liver scarring, but without cirrhosis.

Labeled maintenance: 2.4 mg once weekly, reducible to 1.7 mg if not tolerated

Not an approved use: The Wegovy label does not cover type 2 diabetes. It never sets a dose for blood sugar control.

Novo Nordisk makes Wegovy under NDA 215256. The label says it is given as a shot under the skin.

Same medicine, different label

How is Wegovy different from Ozempic?

Two brand names use this drug. Wegovy is the one for weight-related care. Ozempic is the one for type 2 diabetes. Their dose plans are not the same.
