Approved, investigational, research: what the difference means

An FDA-approved compound has a prescribing label reviewed by the agency. It covers the dose, step-up schedule, major warnings and trial results. Tirzepatide and semaglutide are in this group, so their dose guides use those labels.

An investigational compound is still being tested. Trials in people have been run and published, so real dose numbers exist — but nobody has approved one, and a trial protocol is a study design, not a prescription. Retatrutide, survodutide and cagrilintide sit here: their pages report what the trials gave people, and say that is what it is.

A research compound has neither. When no trial in people has established a dose, that is what those pages say — rather than borrowing a range from animal studies or from a seller. More on how we decide any of this in our sourcing methodology and the editorial policy.

What do peptides do for?

It depends entirely on which peptide, and the gap between them is enormous. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, so the word describes the shape of a molecule rather than anything it does.

Of the 36 peptides in this registry, 6 are FDA-approved medicines with a label that says what they treat. The rest have no FDA-approved use, and for several of them no completed human trial exists to say what they do at all.

Are peptides the same as Ozempic?

Ozempic is a peptide, so the class contains it — but almost nothing else sold as a peptide has been through what Ozempic went through.

Being a peptide says nothing about whether a molecule has been tested in people. That is the distinction this index is built around. Each compound carries the tier of its best source, and most sit well below the two GLP-1s.

Is Ozempic a peptide?

Yes. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, is a peptide, and it is one of the few in this registry with an FDA-approved label behind it.

What is the risk of taking peptides?

For the 6 approved ones, risks are listed on a label and counted in trials. For most of the others, nobody has measured them reliably.

That absence is itself the risk worth naming. 6 compounds in this registry have no published human dose at all. A compound with no completed trial has no published side-effect list either — not a short one, none.
