GLP-1 pill vs injection: what actually differs

What each form asks of you

Wegovy injections are weekly. Its tablets are daily, on an empty stomach, with a wait of at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other oral medicines.

The fasting and waiting instructions apply to each daily tablet. They may affect how it fits around breakfast and other morning medicines.

Why the milligram numbers look so different

The body absorbs different amounts from tablets and injections. The label gives separate doses and switching instructions for the two forms.

The Wegovy label allows a switch from 2.4 mg by weekly injection to 25 mg by daily tablet for adult weight or heart-risk reduction, starting a week after the last shot.

Over one week, 25 mg of tablets each day adds up to 175 mg. The weekly injection contains 2.4 mg. That is about 73 times as many milligrams taken by mouth. This compares the amount taken, not the amount absorbed.

A milligram is the same unit of mass in both forms. Much less semaglutide reaches the blood from a tablet than from an injection. The dose numbers cannot be compared milligram for milligram. See the Wegovy label’s absorption findings.

The label covering Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets opens its dosing section with that line. Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets contain the same drug but are not interchangeable milligram for milligram.

What do FDA reports show about dose errors?

Dose-error terms make up different shares of these products’ reports. The data cannot establish how often errors occur among users or whether the device caused them.

Mounjaro and Zepbound have vial and pen forms. Their report totals combine product forms, so these rows cannot isolate errors made with a vial or a particular device.

For Rybelsus, Wegovy and Ozempic, the wrong-dose term is outside the stored top 25 reaction terms. The table therefore shows an upper limit rather than an exact share. That limit does not establish equal error rates, and it does not mean no errors were reported.

A tablet does not require measuring a volume from a vial. This practical difference does not prove that it explains the differences in the report totals.

Each percentage uses that product’s reports as its denominator, not everyone who took the medicine. It is a share of reports, not a risk estimate. A report does not prove the medicine caused the event.

Are the two forms approved for the same things?

Wegovy tablets cover adult weight and heart-risk indications. Its injection also covers weight reduction in adolescents with obesity and certain adults with MASH liver disease.

The approved uses depend on both the brand and the dosage form. Sharing semaglutide does not give a tablet every approval held by an injection.

For Wegovy, weight reduction in adolescents aged 12 and older with obesity and treatment of MASH with moderate to advanced liver scarring in adults are injection-only uses.

Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets cover blood sugar control and heart-risk reduction in specified adults with type 2 diabetes. They do not have a weight-management approval.

Can you switch between them?

The labels give switching instructions for specific doses. The direction of the switch changes when the next dose starts; a prescriber should plan the change.

The timing is taken directly from the labels. It does not mean that semaglutide from a tablet leaves the body overnight: the Wegovy label reports a half-life of about one week for the drug in both forms.

One more line sits in the same section. Where the 25 mg tablet is not handled well, the label points at the 1.7 mg injection rather than at a smaller tablet.

Does the pill work as well as the shot?

The cited trials do not compare the Wegovy tablet and injection directly. Results from separate trials cannot tell us which form gives the better outcome.

No trial in these sources compares the Wegovy tablet against the Wegovy injection head to head. The two forms were approved on separate applications with separate trial programs, which is not the same thing as a comparison.

The closest thing to an official statement is the swap in the table above. A regulator agreed those two doses can follow each other. That is a dosing instruction, and it is not a claim that the outcomes match.

The choice also involves approved uses, side effects and whether the daily routine fits.

Is there a Mounjaro or Zepbound pill?

Neither Mounjaro nor Zepbound has a tablet form in its FDA label. Both are tirzepatide injections.

Both labels list injection pens and vials. A product advertised as a tirzepatide pill is not a labeled form of Mounjaro or Zepbound.

Sellers online advertise a tirzepatide pill anyway. Whatever the packaging says, such a product is neither Mounjaro nor Zepbound. The page on compounded tirzepatide covers what a copy is and is not.

Is the pill here the only GLP-1 tablet?

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a different GLP-1 medicine taken as a daily tablet. Its label allows it with or without food, unlike the semaglutide tablets above.

It reached the market on 2026-04-01 as Foundayo, approved for weight only. Its label says with or without food, so the empty stomach and the thirty clear minutes are a semaglutide rule rather than a tablet rule.

That is also why it is not a third column above. This page is about choosing between two forms of one drug, and no orforglipron injection exists to choose against. Its own dose chart carries the six strengths and the interaction ceiling.

What this comparison cannot tell you

The evidence does not settle which form will work best for an individual, or provide a general dose conversion.

  • The cited trials do not compare Wegovy tablets with Wegovy injections directly. Label switching instructions do not establish equal treatment outcomes.
  • Report counts are not rates. FDA’s side-effect data does not say how many people took either form without filing a report, and a report is not proof the drug caused anything.
